Serving up surplus at Refettorio Felix
If you don’t know Refettorio Felix at St Cuthbert's Centre you need to get to know this west London gem.
Steeped in history, St. Cuthbert's Centre is a 30-year-old charity that was joined by Refettorio Felix in 2017 through a collaboration with Chef Massimo Bottura’s non-profit organisation Food for Soul, creating the current Refettorio Felix at St. Cuthbert’s Centre.
Yes it's that Massimo Bottura of Osteria Francescana - currently no. 5 in the World's 50 Best Restaurant's List!
Team Karma UK spent Tuesday morning volunteering their time organising the sit down lunch service for 70 of Refettorio Felix's patrons; feeding the vulnerable community in West London. A hectic lunch service with 210 dishes to plate up! With help from their amazing team (shout out to Beyrom, Sarah & Rosie from the organisation!). This lunch service is hosted every Monday to Friday offering an inclusive atmosphere giving vulnerable people a place to feel safe and enjoy a shared sit-down meal.
Here's the menu we served up:
Starter: Leek & potato Soup Main: Fish curry with cauliflower & potato curry with rice or the veggie option Cauliflower & potato curry & dahl with rice. Dessert: Teff flour banana ginger & peanut cake with peanut icing.
All of the food was cooked up by chef's in residence, the incredible Nassim and Clio utilising surplus food donated by The Felix Project.
At the end of the busy two and a half hour lunch service we were lucky enough to sample the (leftover!) lunch menu - here's a peek at what we were eating up. Photo taken too slow for Karma's Barry who got in there with the first portion of the fish curry!
Refettorio Felix provide their guests with necessities from basic needs such as showers and laundry, along with therapeutic services such as counselling, computer classes, art classes and a culinary training programme. The stunning space is also available to hire in the evenings and weekends to help raise money to keep the centre serving their community for many more years to come.
