Has saved more than 390,000 items from being thrown away

Being kind to the planet matters to Gateau; thinking sustainably is simply a natural part of how they work. Leftover bread becomes chips, and if there are buns left over they are baked into rusks. They also try to donate bread to charity.

Mark Stringer, Director of Retail Sales at Gateau, explains the difficulty: many charities have limited capacity to drive around and collect. They simply cannot take everything, which meant Gateau still had to throw some away before they heard about Karma. Another thing that contributed to waste before Karma is that Gateau bakes every day to offer fresh delicacies to all their customers. That is exactly why they were sold the moment they heard about Karma.

Mark also describes how they have reached a new customer group. A group that did not know Gateau before but simply falls in love with their products through Karma. Among others, they have now reached a younger audience they might not have reached the same way without the app, Mark admits. They have also noticed customers daring to try new products. "You might not dare to try something completely new when a cake costs around 400 kronor, but on Karma it is cheaper, so you dare a little more. Yes, our customers love that we are becoming more sustainable and doing something about waste," Mark explains.
