How ICA Liljeholmen grew revenue with saved food

ICA Liljeholmen had a food waste problem that meant lost revenue and a negative environmental impact. By using Karma to sell surplus food they saved more than 1 tonne of food every month and generated SEK 203,500 in direct revenue, while foot traffic and upselling grew.

Problem

ICA Liljeholmen faced the challenge of large amounts of good food risking going to waste every month. This meant not only unnecessary waste but also lost revenue. A solution was needed to cut food waste while growing revenue.

Solution

By implementing Karma, ICA Liljeholmen could start selling the food that would otherwise have been thrown away. This initiative let them save more than 1 tonne of food every month. Karma also attracted new customers to the store, which increased foot traffic and enabled upselling in store.

 Result

Using Karma, ICA Liljeholmen generated SEK 203,500 in direct revenue every month from selling food that would otherwise have gone to waste. Beyond that revenue, they saw a significant increase in new customers in the store and more upselling as customers bought other products. The total combined value of using Karma amounted to 14 times the value of the saved food. The initiative has strengthened not only the finances but also the commitment to sustainability, which contributed to ICA Liljeholmen being named "Saver of the Year 2018".
